The Goshen College men's soccer team scored two times in each half en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Beavers on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012. Bluffton fell to 2-4 while the Maple Leafs upped their season mark to 4-3.
Bluffton struggled to mount any offense in the first half as Goshen posted an 8-1 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes. The home team needed less than a minute to get on the scoreboard when Caleb Longenecker headed a Mark Baker pass just inside the far post. Jacob Yoder made it 2-0 midway through the half thanks to an assist from Daniel Martin.
Longenecker buried his secong goal of the match just over 10 minutes into period two before Joseph Grunden capped the scoring with an unassisted tally in minute 66. Goshen held Bluffton at bay for the remainder of the contest, moving to 4-3 following the victory over the Beavers.
Goshen finished with a 21-11 advantage in shots (10-5 on frame), but the visitors turned up the intensity in the second half with 10 of those attempts coming after the break. The Beavers forced three more corner kicks (7-4), while Goshen was whistled for four more fouls (11-7).
Dylan Mathews (Arlington) fired a team-best three shots, while Peter Carlson (Toledo/Springfield) and Nate Byrum (London) both chipped in with two shots. Freshman keeper Jeff Yoder (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) collected six saves for the Beavers.
Bluffton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Beavers host Moody Bible Institute. The contest is slated for 10 a.m.
