Forum to explore “curating identity” online
“Curating Identity” will be the topic of Dr. Trevor Bechtel and Carrie Phillips for Bluffton University’s Civic Engagement Forum at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, in Founders Hall.
Bechtel is an associate professor of religion at Bluffton, while Phillips is the university’s archives and special collections librarian. Their lecture, free and open to the public, will look at how technology and social media are influencing the ways people tell their personal stories. By combining the perspectives of information science, theology and philosophy, together with popular examples from applications like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, they will examine ways in which identity is increasingly curated in an online world.
The forum comes the day before Bluffton’s annual Civic Engagement Day. Activities will be held campuswide on April 10, centering on the university’s 2012-13 civic engagement theme of “Virtual Living: Technology’s Impact on Culture and Learning.”
