Native American discusses issues of self-identity in university forum
Native American Guy Jones will discuss the issue of self-identity and the search for one’s place in American society in a Bluffton University forum on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Jones’s presentation, “Who Said I’m an Indian?” is free and open to the public beginning at 11 a.m. in Founders Hall.
Jones is co-founder and a board member of the Dayton, Ohio-based Miami Valley Council for Native Americans, a cultural and educational organization. A Hunkpapa Lakota and full-blood member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, he is a direct descendant of Pizi (Chief Gall), who fought against the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
Jones is also co-author of the award-winning “Lessons from Turtle Island: Native Curriculum in Early Childhood Classrooms.” In 1998, the North Dakota native taught a summer graduate course at Bluffton on the spirituality and the Seven Rites of the Lakota and the interconnection of spirituality and culture.
