Flu-related death of teen reported in Allen County
Allen County Public Health and the Ohio Department of Health confirmed the first pediatric flu-related death of the 2024-2025 flu season occurred in Allen County. The deceased individual was a teenager under the age of 18 from Allen County. This tragic loss underscores the seriousness of the flu and the importance of prevention, especially with flu activity at very high levels at this time.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this loss,” said Brandon Fischer, ACPH health Commissioner. “This death is a reminder that flu can be a severe illness, especially for those at higher risk, such as older adults, young children, pregnant individuals and people with underlying health conditions.”
To protect yourself and those around you, Allen County Public Health strongly recommends the following preventative measures:
Get Vaccinated: The flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu and is recommended for everyone six months and older. If you haven’t received your vaccination for this flu season, it isn’t too late!
Practice Good Hygiene: Wash hands or use alcohol-based sanitizers frequently, cover coughs and sneezes or cough and sneeze into your elbows, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and avoid close contact with sick individuals.
Stay Home When Sick: If you experience flu symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, or fatigue, stay home to prevent spreading the virus.
The flu vaccine is available at Allen County Public Health by appointment. Flu vaccines are also available at retail pharmacies and physicians’ offices in the county.
