American Red Cross asks for donations to assist Findlay fire victims
Early on the morning of Feb. 23, a massive fire at the Argyle Apartments building in downtown Findlay drove 20 families from their homes, with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
The Red Cross was on scene quickly, to provide for the men, women and children who lost their homes that morning. An evacuation center was opened by Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers for the families.
Working with our partner agencies, including Hope House and Century Health, we began assessing the immediate needs of the families and providing assistance for food, clothing, medications, shoes and winter coats.
We opened an emergency shelter for those without other accommodations. At the same time, we were also at the scene of the fire, providing canteen and support services for the brave men and women battling the blaze. In the days following the fire, the Red Cross and the agencies of the Hancock County Disaster Relief and Recovery Collaborative worked together to provide help for the families from the Argyle.
This work continues today. Many of the families have found a new home, but still need help with rent, furniture and bedding. Others are still looking for a home.
There are many ways you can help. If you have clothes, shoes and household items you'd like to donate, please take them to Chopin Hall, the Salvation Army Thrift Store or where you would normally take such donations.
You can support Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts by making a donation to the Hancock County Red Cross, 125 Fair St. in Findlay or online at www.hancockredcross.org. A special fund has been set up to help the families by the United Way of Hancock County and donations can be made at their office. Our community can be proud of the way we have come together to support the families affected by this tragedy.
