Swiss Society's March 13 meeting focus on history and stories of the Swiss Homestead
The history of and recollections from persons who have lived at one time or another in the Swiss Community Historical Society's Swiss Homestead is the theme of the Swiss Society's spring meeting on March 13.
The homestead is also known as the Schumacher homestead. The meeting is at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 13, in the Patio Room of Maple Crest, 700 Maple Crest Court, Bluffton. It is the annual spring meeting of the society and is open to the public.
The presentation will begin with a brief history, by Rachel Friesen, of the early residents of the house, from the time it was built in 1843 until 1968 when the Society purchased the property.
This will be followed by a panel of former residential caretakers who will share memories of living in the house from 1970 until 2006 when the Society began restoration of the house to its original condition.
The panel, moderated by SCHS board member Ron Lora, will include former caretakers Joyce Schumacher, Heidrun Awad, Fred Steiner, John Betts, Marie Dyck, Kristi Kohli and Mark Suter.
Following the program light refreshments will be served and members of the panel will be available for informal discussion.
