Blanchard Valley Hospital (BVH) was recently named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics, part of the IBM Watson Health business. This is the fifth time BVH has been recognized with this honor. Previous years in which the organization received this distinction include 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2016.

Truven Health Analytics identified the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance for over 3000 hospitals. The study found that the top performing hospitals in the country were able to improve outcomes while reducing overall expense per patient.

Overall, BVH was one of four hospitals in the state recognized as one of the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® in the overall 100 Top category. Blanchard Valley Hospital was one of 20 hospitals in the nation for medium-sized hospitals.

The study found that the top performing hospitals in the country had lower 30-day mortality and readmission rates, fewer complications and higher survival rates, while maintaining three percent lower inpatient costs per beneficiary than non-winning peer group hospitals.

The following were the key performance benchmarks for Blanchard Valley Hospital in comparison to winning and non-winning hospitals across the nation:

 ·       Higher Patient Satisfaction: Patients at BVH performed better than 90 percent of the hospitals in patient satisfaction scores.

·       Better Survival Rate: BVH had a higher survival rate for inpatients than 81 percent of the hospitals.

·       Fewer Patient Complications: BVH had a lower complication rate than 84 percent  of the hospitals across the nation.

·       Lower Readmission Rates: BVH performed better than 90 percent of hospitals in reducing patients requiring additional hospital care 30-days following hospital admission.

·       Shorter Length of Stay:  BVH had a median severity-adjusted length of stay that was better than 82 percent of hospitals. Overall, winning hospitals had a half-day shorter stay than peers.

 ·       Lower cost of visit and post-visit care:  BVH ranked better than average on decreasing expense not only during the inpatient admission, but additional resources needed following the admission. 

The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals is the most comprehensive and academically-driven study of its kind. It evaluates clinical and operational performance in 11 areas, addressing: inpatient mortality; 30-day mortality rate; complications; core measures; 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate; severity-adjusted average length of stay; mean emergency room throughput; inpatient expense per discharge; Medicare spend per beneficiary; adjusted operating profit margin; and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The study has been conducted annually since 1993.
