Middle-Aged Middle Schooler: a poem
Middle-Aged Middle Schooler
By Elizabeth Nisly
I'm a middle-aged middle schooler
I've been here so long
I've done this 40 times
But I still do it wrong
I can't seem to get
This pre-algebra junk
So when the tests come around,
I do nothing but flunk
The teachers are sick
Of having me in their class
I've been here since I
Was a wee 12-year-old lass
Now going on 50
And still in grade eight
I think it's high time
That I graduate
But when the tests come around,
I take one look and freak
If I can't get it this time,
My future looks bleak
When will I escape
This middle-school prison?
The teachers say I
Need to "pay attention" and "listen"
But I don't know what they mean
When they say "take notes in class"
Plus, math is when I
Take my afternoon nap
And, call me crazy,
But which do you think is more fun:
Taking notes about war
Or shooting a gun
I know, I know
I'm supposed to "be so mature"
Like the teachers say,
"The kids really look up to her"
But, if you ask me,
As long as junior high is my host
I'm gonna act like the teenager
That my teachers hate most
