LIMA - The Bluffton girls tennis team lost at Shawnee 5-0 Tuesday.

The defeat dropped the Lady Pirate net record to 0-2. Shawnee swept all 10 sets in the dual match.

The freshmen second doubles tandem of Caitlyn Couch and Brooke Camper came closest to winning a set, but they lost their second set in a 7-6 tiebreak (7-4 in points).

Seniors Julia Smallcombe, Olivia Barnes and Pearl Lewandowski fell in singles play. Juniors Libby Frazier and Ellie Nickel also lost at first doubles.

BLUFFTON - The Bluffton golf team hosted the eight-team, annual Pirate Invitational at the Bluffton Golf Course Friday.

The Pirates and Lima Central Catholic tied for first place with 330 strokes apiece. But the Thunderbirds won the tiebreaker with a better fifth man score, 90-95.

Kenny Lovett led the Pirates and won the event by two strokes with an 18-hole score of 37-37=74. Owen Knapp of Upper Sandusky finished second with a 37-39=76.

BLUFFTON - The Bluffton girls tennis team served up its opener with a 4-1 loss to visiting Celina Monday. 

Senior Pearl Lewandowski posted the lone Lady Pirate win in three tough sets at third singles. She defeated Grace Schneider 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 7-5.

Senior Julia Smallcombe won her first set in a tiebreaker (7-4) at first singles, but then dropped 12 of the next 13 games to lose in three sets.

A decision on spectators at contact sports has not yet been made, however the OHSAA believes that at a minimum parents should be permitted to attend.

Following a recommendation this week from the Governor’s Office to shorten the season due to concerns that COVID-19 may spike in early winter, the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Friday that if high school football games are approved by the Governor, all teams will enter the playoffs beginning Oct. 9 and the state championship games will be played no later than Nov. 21.

CLYDE - The Bluffton golf team teed off its 2020 campaign by finishing a strong second in the nine-team Woodmore Invitational at the Green Hills Golf Course in Clyde Tuesday.

Tourney host Woodmore finished first with 322 strokes, 34 shots ahead of the runner-up Pirates (356).

Old Fort came in third with 361 strokes, followed by Toledo Christian (368), Eastwood (384), Otsego (393), Lake (402), Gibsonburg (417) and Rossford (420).

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) unveiled a bold, revitalized visual identity on Monday. The comprehensive redesign includes distinct primary and secondary logos, a complete suite of sport-specific and championship marks, and an exclusive custom font. 

The HCAC partnered with Skye Design Studios (SDS - www.sdsbranding.com) – a national leader in sport branding – for the project. The HCAC and SDS engaged partners from all 10 member campuses throughout the rebranding initiative.
